Full-Spectrum CBD in Pet Sprays Explained
What is Full-Spectrum CBD in Pet Sprays?
In the ever-changing CBD market, it can be challenging to understand exactly what’s in our products. This notion applies to dietary supplements as well as CBD extracts themselves. To this end, the basic foundation for all BARKSY sprays is “full-spectrum” CBD. To help our peers and customers better understand BARKSY formulations, we thought it would be worthwhile to explore the idea of full-spectrum CBD in more detail.
Hemp and the 2018 Farm Bill
The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill officially legalized hemp in the United States. This historic legislation gave rise to a legal national hemp industry – the BARKSY team is honored to take part in this exciting new marketplace.
The Farm Bill did more than just legalize hemp. It also gave us many of the terms and definitions with which the industry operates today. To illustrate, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website tells us, the Farm Bill “removed hemp, defined as cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) and derivatives of cannabis with extremely low concentrations of the psychoactive compound delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis), from the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).”
The limits that the Farm Bill placed on THC are very important in understanding what defines legal hemp as well as full-spectrum CBD. According to the FDA, cannabis that contains more than 0.3 % THC is considered federally illegal. You can think of this higher THC cannabis as the normal marijuana found at dispensaries today. Conversely, hemp produces less than 0.3% THC, making it legal in the eyes of the FDA.
Full-Spectrum CBD Extracts
Hemp-derived CBD products can be made from a few different plant extracts: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate. Concerning CBD for both people and pets, different businesses use these extracts to create specific CBD products. These CBD products are as varied as infused beverages, sleep aids, pain medications, bath products, and pet supplements.
Full-spectrum extracts include all of the beneficial chemicals found in the hemp plant, as well as trace amounts of THC (below 0.3% THC). Conversely, broad-spectrum extracts feature all the chemicals from the plant, minus any THC. Finally, CBD isolate is exactly what the name says – pure CBD isolated from other compounds in the hemp plant.
BARKSY products are made strictly from full-spectrum extracts because they offer the most health benefits for your pets. This is due to a newly discovered phenomenon known as the “entourage effect.”
The term entourage effect is used to describe the holistic effect of several chemical compounds in hemp, working in unison with one another. This effect includes the simultaneous influence of the “full-spectrum” of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural chemicals. Interestingly, according to the Project CBD website, it is believed that the entourage effect process “magnifies the therapeutic benefits of the plant’s individual components—so that the medicinal impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its parts.”
At BARKSY, we formulated our pet sprays with the holistic benefits of the entourage effect in mind. To this end, we ensure that our products include enough THC to propagate the entourage effect. Yet, we make sure we don’t go over the 0.3% limit mandated in the 2018 Farm Bill. Also, please note that this trace amount of THC has absolutely no psychoactive effects on animals or humans.
